Tejano (Mexico, US) Musical Trip

This has spiked my attention when I was reminded that a Mexican Musical Trip qualified as something that isn't American or European, because the first person I thought about was the Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla. Tejano has evolved from the Mexican population in South and Central Texas, and makes up of three musical styles; Conjunto, Orchestra and Modern. Like many other music cultures it changes and modernizes over time with the influences of new technology and equipment and diverse communities. Tejano music is said to be "local music with a global identity," which means that they have used many parts of other cultures of music into their own.

Although, Selena's most recent music was more American influenced, she still held deep respect for her community, culture and where her roots came from. I have shared this video of vocalist, Selena performing "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" which has a "Spanish-Language upbeat, cumbia pop song with en español and reggae influences."

Beat

The song has a cuban playful beat that brings a lot of excitement. Selena sings along side the instruments and it is an easy flow song that you can resonate with. You can feel her energy and happiness as she sings and moves the ever changing beats and rhythms.

Lyrics

The song is sung in the Spanish Language, and which I could not understand without reading what the words mean. According to, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom - Wiki this song is about a young girl falling in love with, who sees a boy walks by and he makes her heart go "thump thump thump."

Each time
Each time that I see him go by
My heart goes crazy
And begins to pound and beat
And it becomes excited(it becomes excited)
It no longer reasons
I can't control it
And it becomes excited (it becomes excited)
It no longer reasons

and it begins to sing to me
It sings to me like this, like this
(Chorus)
Bidi Bidi Bom Bom(Bidi Bidi Bom Bom)
Bidi Bidi Bom Bom(Bidi Bidi Bom Bom)
Bidi Bidi Bidi Bidi Bidi Bom Bom
Bidi Bidi Bidi Bidi Bidi Bom Bom
Each time
Each time that I hear him speak
Even my legs tremble
And so does my heart(and my heart does the same)
And it becomes excited(it becomes excited)
It no longer reasons
I can't control it
And it becomes excited(it becomes excited)
It no longer reasons And it begins to sing to me
It sings to me like this, like this
(Chorus)
When I hear this song
My heart wants to sing like this
(Chorus)

Timbre

The song has 90 beats per minute and is written is B-Flat. This beat of this song is repetitive throughout the versus and chorus.

Rhythm

As I stated before the sounds of this song are repetitive. Each rhythm is played four times before the next rhythm comes on.

This song was an interesting musical trip. Definitely a different cultural background, but it does not change the impact that Selena has made in the musical industry.
